Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas' house move 'could be a sign of struggles'

A source believes Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas could be struggling with "empty nest syndrome" after Carys, the second of their two children, moved out in 2021.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas have reportedly put their huge New York mansion on the market for a staggering $18 million.

And while 54-year-old Catherine and Michael, 79, are understood to be one of the happiest couples in showbusiness, a source tells New Idea the move could hint at some difficulties behind-the-scenes.

They described the eight-bedroom, 12-bathroom property as the Hollywood duo's “precious family home”.

Although, the property is somewhat quieter than it has been previously, with children Carys, 21, and Dylan, 23, having flown the nest.

Michael previously admitted that the couple had “mixed-feelings” about the home being empty. The actor admitted they looked at each other and wondered “what else are we going to talk about?”

The source says the sale “could be a sign” the couple are struggling with empty nest syndrome.

It comes years after the famous couple briefly split in 2013, before reconciling.

Franklin star Michael spoke about the split at the time, saying: “Every couple has their difficult times.”

However, Chicago actress Catherine has previously opened up about her views on divorce, branding it “repulsive” and not what she would do.

And while putting their home on the market could spell trouble, there is, of course, the chance the couple feel they simply need a smaller home now their children have moved on.

The New Idea source commented: “Selling the house is a huge step. They’re at a new life stage now.”

In a statement to The Wall Street Journal, Catherine explained the decision, saying: "Now that both our son and daughter have left the nest it seems like the right time to sell.”

She added: "Michael and I plan to spend more time in Bermuda and Europe."

Michael and Catherine met in 1998 at the Deauville Film Festival. They were engaged in December 1999 before marrying in November the following year.

After they reconciled in 2014, following their brief split, Michael said the pair were “back stronger than ever”.

According to PEOPLE, the couple were understood to have struggled with the stress of Michael’s throat cancer battle - that saw him declared cancer free in 2011, a year after his diagnosis - and Catherine’s bipolar disorder.

In February 2024, the couple shared touching Valentine’s Day posts about each other, with Michael captioning his: “Love you always and forever.”
