Sky News halted for breaking David Lammy update: 'Hypocrite!'
The deputy prime minister walked away from journalists after a tense interview.

David Lammy was branded a “hypocrite” after Sky News was brought to a halt for a breaking alert. The deputy prime minister was standing outside Downing Street as press gathered around him, with one reporter asking: “This isn’t sustainable, is it? Four ministers have now resigned.” Lammy was defiant, however, as he issued a statement before quickly walking away from gathered reporters.
With a breaking news strap playing on-screen that read: “Deputy PM David Lammy: Starmer has my full support”, Lammy said: “I’m thinking of my constituents and many people across the country, worried about what they’re hearing from the Strait of Hormuz and their own finances. We must put country before party.”
He stammered slightly as he went on: “The only person that benefits from the L-Labour Party navel-gazing in this way is Nigel Farage and the populist right.

“Keir Starmer was elected just under two years ago – a mandate from the British people for five years. He has my full support, and what I say to colleagues is, ‘Look, let’s just step back, take a breath… Let’s remember that we have the King’s speech. We are in government to do a job of work.’
“It’s been 24 hours now and nobody has come forward to put themselves forward in the processes that exist in the party.
“No-one seems to have the names to stand up against Keir Starmer, and for those who are suggesting that he should stand down, they should say which candidate would be better.

“Let’s get on with the business of running this country and government – that’s what I’ve been doing today, that’s what the prime minister’s been doing. I urge colleagues to step back and not benefit Nigel Farage and Reform.”
Viewers were quick to react on social media, with one tweeting: “It’s David Lammy and his idiotic attacks on jury trials that have put Starmer in this mess. With friends like these…”
Another simply wrote: “He’s a hypocrite.”
Somebody else penned: “If they are suggesting Keir Starmer is the best Labour has got then we have serious problems.”
