Keir Starmer faced a blistering attack over Labour's struggling government, with one critic branding it "beyond repair" and "a shambles". The prime minister is facing the biggest leadership crisis of his premiership following Labour's devastating defeat in the local elections. Cabinet ministers, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, have asked Starmer to consider his position, with government aides even quitting their posts.

While 72 Labour MPs have called for him to set out a timetable for his resignation, others have urged him not to give up. Political commentator Trevor Kavanagh believes the prime minister will not resign unless he is forced to, but suspects that could happen "very soon". Speaking to Julia Hartley-Brewer on TalkTV, he said: "I don't think we're going to get a resignation from the prime minister until he has been forced into the position and I think that could very soon."

Tearing into Labour, he continued: "This government is broken, it is beyond repair and I think that what we saw in Downing Street today was a charade as all of these cabinet ministers paraded out with smiles on their faces and pretended that everything was business as normal.

"This is on the eve of the King's speech in which the King will lay out the agenda for the next parliament. There is no government as such at the moment. It's a shambles and there will have to be a denouement and it will be Wes Streeting finally making up his mind that he has to go now or never.

"I think the status quo will not last until the weekend. I think that Starmer is simply going through the motions of making it clear that he's not walking away because it would look like an act of cowardice."

However, Kavanagh claimed Starmer hiding from his own ministers is the very definition of cowardice.

The TalkTV presenter also weighed in, branding Starmer's speech at Monday's press conference "embarrassing", but argued that many believe the problem lies within the Labour Party as a whole and not the prime minister.

Trevor responded: "You're right, but this is still down to management. If Starmer was anything remotely like a leader, he would have led from the front. He has failed to lead at all since he entered Downing Street 21 and a half months ago.

"You've got two cabinet ministers saying that he's got to set a timetable and they're not alone in this. They're simply the ones who have spoken out today. The fact that Starmer is obdurately clinging to office will prize a few more of those over the coming days."
