A gripping new true crime series is set to hit screens in the very near future.

True Crime: Hashtag Homicide is an eight-part series that explores the fascinating intersection of social media and true crime.

Across the episodes, viewers will discover how the digital world becomes the backdrop for murder, investigation, justice and prevention.The programme, which will be available to stream on U, sees the show examine crimes committed, gather evidence, survey crime scenes and scour social media.

A synopsis for the forthcoming series reads: "From online sleuths and perpetrators caught on camera to private messages and dating apps."

"Following detectives, journalists, social media experts and family members, we learn how these crimes were solved and what is being done to prevent them from happening again."

One episode focuses on the devastating case of travel influencer Gabby Petito, who disappeared in 2021, reports the Mirror.

Gabby went missing while travelling with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, on a cross-country road trip.

As the 22-year-old chronicled her journey on social media, her Instagram posts and the online van-life community assisted armchair detectives in retracing her final movements.

The case rapidly became a viral sensation, offering viewers a compelling example of how social media can intertwine with true crime.

One episode will delve into the murder of 14-year-old Breck Bednar, who was tragically killed in 2014. The teenager was lured to his death by an older boy named Lewis Daynes in a case that shocked the nation.

The pair first connected through an online gaming platform, and the friendship soon took a sinister turn. By examining grooming messages, server chats, and call records, the programme reveals how digital manipulation ultimately led to a devastating real-world tragedy.

A further episode examines the murders of Ana Abulaban and Rayburn Cardenas Barron.

A synopsis for the third instalment reads: "In October 2021, Ana Abulaban and Rayburn Cardenas Barron were murdered in San Diego by Ana's estranged husband, TikTok influencer Ali Abulaban ("JinnKid"), whose online persona and digital trail became central to a case where internet notoriety collided with real-world violence."

Additional cases set to be explored include the murders of Ellen Higginbottom, Daisy De La O, Gordon Semple, Zohreh Sadeghi, Mohammad Milad Naseri and Nik Bird.

A release date for True Crime: Hashtag Homicide is yet to be announced
