CNN sparked controversy minutes into their late-night show as they blasted Donald Trump with a scathing compilation video. On Tuesday (April 21), the 79-year-old Republican leader issued a major update just hours before the original deadline he had set for the US ceasefire with Iran was set to expire. The US President said that he had agreed to delay any fresh military action after what he described as a request from Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

The two-week ceasefire was due to expire in the early hours of Wednesday morning (April 22). US Vice President JD Vance was expected to travel to Islamabad today to lead the US delegation in a second round of peace talks with Iranian officials. However, reports on Tuesday evening suggested the Vice President had remained in Washington amid uncertainty over whether Tehran would send a delegation."

After sharing the fresh update with viewers, CNN cut to a clip from various interviews with the Republican leader reassuring Americans that the war in Iran will end "soon". In the first clip taken from March 9, he told the press: "It's going to be finished pretty quickly", with the President telling reporters on March 29 on his private plane: "I do see a deal in Iran, it could be soon."

Meanwhile, on April 1, he insisted: "We are going to finish the job, and we're going to finish it very fast, we're getting very close." Last Wednesday (April 15), he told Fox Business: "I think it's close to over, I view it as very close to over."

The following day, he added: "I will say the war on Iran is going along swimmingly, we can do whatever we want, and it should be ending very soon." It didn't take long for viewers to flock to X - formerly known as Twitter - to call out the awkward clip, which is sure to frustrate and embarrass the politician.

One user penned: "CNN just aired a devastating supercut of six weeks of Trump falsely claiming the Iran war 'should be ending soon'." Another pointed out: "Trump did the same thing during the bioweapons pandemic... time will tell," as a third asked: "How does anyone support this unfit, stupid man as President?"

Taking to Truth Social, Trump announced: "Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munit, and Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our attack on the country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.

"I have therefore directed our military to continue the blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other."

The apparent delay came as tensions continued to rise following the US seizure of an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman. Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, took to X on Tuesday evening to say that blockading Iranian ports is an "act of war and thus a violation of the ceasefire".

He added that "striking a commercial vessel and taking its crew hostage is an even greater violation." The Pentagon earlier confirmed American forces boarded another sanctioned tanker between Monday and Tuesday night.
