Renowned horror writer Stephen King has delivered exciting news regarding a popular television adaptation of his work that viewers have described as "messed up" and "creepy".

Drawing from King's novel of the same title, The Institute debuted its first series on MGM+ last year. The story follows a cohort of gifted youngsters who are kidnapped and held at a clandestine government facility where they are experimented on.

King, who holds an executive producer role on the programme, has announced that filming for Series 2 is now in progress, with the storyline continuing directly from where the first concluded, reports the Mirror.

Via social media, he posted an image of a script with the simple caption: "Production has begun on #TheInstitute Season 2! Coming soon to MGM+."

The returning ensemble includes Ben Barnes (Shadow and Bone, The Punisher, Westworld), Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Joe Freeman, Simone Miller (Run the Burbs), Fionn Laird (Under the Banner of Heaven), Robert Joy (FROM), Arlen So (Private Eyes West Coast), Jeff Fahey (Lost) and Hannah Galway (Billy the Kid).

Additionally, Game of Thrones actor Alfie Allen is set to join the cast as a European technology tycoon who is amongst the Institute's financial supporters.

An official synopsis for the forthcoming season states: "The Institute Season 2 picks up Luke Ellis, Tim Jamieson, and their fellow survivors in the immediate aftermath of Season 1's explosive climax as they work to expose the Institute's crimes while staying one step ahead of the army of killers on their tail.

"Meanwhile, the ruthless and calculating Ms. Sigsby pursues her quest for vengeance and a return to power, in the process discovering more about the deep inner workings of the Institute than she ever could have imagined."

One devotee of the programme remarked: "The Institute is kinda messed up, and I love it. A kid wakes up somewhere weird, finds out other kids can do crazy mind stuff, and things go sideways fast. So many dark secrets and creepy vibes-but man, I can't stop watching."

Another viewer enthused: "Just binged on the first season, absolutely outstanding series! Can't wait for the second season. For Stephen lover up there who read and seen the Firestarter movies, this is a continuation on an upper level. Fantastic cast and most exciting show I watched in a long time."

A third admirer of the series commented: "A masterpiece with an all-star cast, along with young new faces, this show hits all the sweet spots. If you've read the source material it is quite well adapted and will have you sitting on the edge of your seat getting better every single episode."

A release date for the second series has yet to be announced, but fans can watch all episodes of the first on MGM+.
