Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story is on Netflix and the harrowing documentary has taken the number one spot on the streaming platform's TOP 10 Movies chart. The documentary explores a heartbreaking child abuse case in Utah back in 2023.

The film tells the story of content creator Ruby Franke and how she formed a friendship with family counsellor Jodi Hildebrandt that had catastrophic consequences. They both met through their church community in Utah, while Hildebrandt was the founder of the life-coaching company ConneXions.

Franke, meanwhile, vlogged about her life on the YouTube channel 8 Passengers as she had six children with her ex-husband, Kevin Franke. Both women, who became known for their controversial disciplinary techniques, were convicted of child abuse against two of Franke's children.

In August 2023, Franke's twelve-year-old son escaped through a window of Hildebrandt's house, where he was being held captive with one of his younger sisters. In February 2024, Franke received four consecutive sentences of between one and fifteen years' imprisonment, meaning she must serve a minimum term of four years in prison.

Following Franke's conviction, her children spent some time in protective custody, but Kevin has since been given full custody of his children. Kevin, meanwhile, has remarried and his new wife, Becca Bevan, was welcomed with open arms by the rest of the family.

Eldest daughter Shari Franke posted about her father's wedding on Instagram, sharing a photo of herself with Becca and her brother Chad Franke. She said: "I don’t even have words to describe how amazing it was to see my dad get married!

“When I was younger, I could always see he wasn’t happy, and I prayed that one day he’d find someone that made him happy like he deserved. I’m so glad I was there to witness his love story.”

Kevin, 47, announced the engagement back in October 2025, after his divorce from Ruby was finalised in March of that year. He was not charged in relation to the criminal case as he had already been separated from Ruby and had no knowledge of the abuse.

As part of the post announcing his engagement, he said: "Redemption is a real thing. There were moments during the past three years when I didn’t think I would ever feel happiness or the warm embrace of a loving partner again.

"I’m so grateful for grace, resilience, a loving God who gives me hope, and family and friends that buoyed me when I couldn’t stand on my own."

The former engineering professor first spoke publicly about the abuse case in July 2024, during a meeting of Utah’s Child Welfare Legislative Oversight Panel. He pushed for legislation addressing loopholes in the state’s child welfare laws that prevented authorities from intervening.

Franke's neighbours and their eldest daughter had all reported concerns about the Franke children in the past, and authorities had visited their home 15 times over a period of four years, but they were not able to make contact with the family.

Kevin also called for the regulation of life coaches like Hildebrandt, claiming they could abuse their power to prey on the vulnerable who were desperately seeking help.
