Death Valley: Official trailer

The BBC has unveiled the impressive audience numbers for its fresh comedy-drama Death Valley following its debut at the weekend.

The announcement comes amidst varied feedback from audiences who’ve watched the first episode that recently aired.

Set against a Welsh backdrop, the six-part series centres on detective sergeant Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth) and washed-up actor John Chapel (Timothy Spall), whose paths cross to form an unconventional crime-solving team.

Created and penned by Paul Doolan, known for his contributions to the Sky One hit Trollied, Death Valley has already drawn parallels to Ludwig and Death in Paradise.

Premiering a few days ago, the opening episode was broadcast on BBC One on Sunday evening. Viewers can indulge in the entire series now, with all episodes accessible via BBC iPlayer.

BBC’s latest figures reveal that the initial airing of Death Valley - slotted between 8.15pm and 9pm - captivated 2.9 million viewers on BBC One, marking it as the most viewed launch for a new BBC Scripted Comedy in five years, even surpassing Ludwig's premiere last September which garnered 2.8 million viewers.

Featuring Gavin and Stacey alumni such as Steffan Rhodri and Melanie Walters, the show riffs on the “unlikely crime-solving partnership” between faded celebrity John, known for playing a TV sleuth, and the detective Janie, reports The Mirror.

A synopsis tantalises: "They'd make the perfect crime-fighting duo - if only they could get along!"

The premiere the show received mixed views on X. One disgruntled viewer remarked: "5 mins and switching off - this is AWFUL soooooo baaad."

Another simply put it: "Had to turn over." While an additional critic declared: "I only lasted 10 mins."

The string of negative receptions continued for the new TV series.

One individual commented: "Ten minutes in...boring...screaming unintelligible actors...no thanks."

Echoing this sentiment, another spectator wrote: "Just sat and watched the biggest heap of s***e ever and it's called #DeathValley that's 45 minutes of life I ain't getting back."

In a more thought-out critique, one viewer shared their opinion recently: "Shame #DeathValley had good potential. But it's so cringeworthy. Can't believe it was considered good Sunday night viewing. Can't wait for #Ludwig series 2!!!"

Yet, not everyone was disenchanted with the show. Some audience members expressed their enjoyment of Death Valley.

An enthusiastic fan said: "I really enjoyed that. Hilarious! Policing at its finest! #DeathValley. Well done all involved! :) I howled all the way through!"

Another viewer sang praises from a different corner of the platform, saying: "Not everyone's cup of tea but I loved #DeathValley. Quirky but most enjoyable, acting was superb by both lead actors. Full marks to all involved in this series - looking forward to more. Well done #BBC."

A third viewer praised: "#DeathValley is absolutely excellent. Getting the blend of comedy and drama right is very difficult - but the team have done it here. It can build a following. The brilliant Brokenwood Mysteries from NZ is now in its 11th season. #DeathValley can follow a similar trajectory."

In a recent post, another fan shared their enjoyment: "#deathvalley really enjoying the show. Easy going murder mystery. Think Death in Paradise but in Llandeilo. Nice to hear genuine Welsh accents on TV. Tidy."

Death Valley is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
