Prince William row: BBC Breakfast star's outrageous royal blunder exposed
PRINCE WILLIAM was once the subject of an outrageous TV blunder when ‘BBC Breakfast' star Charlie Stayt confused the acronym for the Royal Air Force (RAF) with something terribly different, unearthed accounts reveal.
Prince William: Stayt accidentally says royal was in ‘IRA’ in 2014
‘BBC Breakfast’ serves as one of a roster of morning shows to inform the nation of the day’s top news stories in the UK and across the world. Their live broadcasts have been on-air for nearly 20 years and were launched to merge BBC One and BBC News 24 programmes. Due to the nature of presenting an unedited minute-to-minute show, presenters have been susceptible to a number of on-air gaffes. One of the worst came when Charlie Stayt unintentionally misspoke an acronym to denote Prince William’s military service.
The shocking BBC blunder stunned viewers and left the presenter gobsmacked as he bumbled over a quick retraction of his statement during an early morning bulletin about the Royal Family.
Naga Munchetty started the April 2014 report by telling viewers that the Queen’s grandson and the Duchess of Cambridge had travelled to New Zealand to carry out several engagements.
Charlie continued to explain that Kate had met “more than 40 children and their families” at a hospice while Prince William was on another visit.
In an outrageous error, he continued: “William went to an aircraft factory where he renewed his passion for flying despite having left the IRA…”
Realising his awful mistake he corrected “err, the RAF!”, before continuing to tell viewers more about their separate trips.
Charlie went on: “The royal couple then went together to pay their respects at a war memorial at a town called Cambridge.”
There he pointed out the poignant name of the location due to it being the same as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s royal title.
The presenter seemed to move on from his blunder about the Irish republican group but fans on Twitter didn’t let him live it down.
JUST IN: Dan Walker's brutal backlash to Piers Morgan tweet exposed
One wrote: “I never watch #BBCBreakfast, but presenter Charlie Stayt accidentally said Prince William used to be in the IRA. #AccidentalPartridge.”
Another tweeted: “Charlie Stayt might even end up in some remote state.. That was just horrible.. #CharlieStayt.”
Prince William was trained as a search and rescue pilot during his four years in the British military.
After he retired from the RAF in 2009, he served the East Anglian Air Service for two years before he stopped to take over more royal obligations.
