Scandal around Peter Phillips' wedding that shocked the Royal Family

Peter Phillips is preparing to tie the knot for the second time tomorrow, with his wedding to NHS nurse Harriet Sperling set to take place in Cirencester. Peter and Harriet, who made their public debut in 2024, will reportedly hold their reception at Princess Anne's estate, Gatcombe Park.

Anne's only son was previously married to Autumn Kelly, who is the mother of his two teenage daughters. The former couple's wedding took place in May 2008, with their divorce finalised in 2021.

Although the day was undoubtedly a happy occasion at the time, one decision made by Peter left some members of the Royal Family shocked.

Peter managed to infuriate his late grandmother and other members of his family when he secured a staggering £500k deal for photographs of his reception.

The scandal reportedly led the late Queen to ban senior members of the Royal Family from appearing in celebrity magazine photo deals.

Peter married Autumn at St George's Chapel, Windsor on May 17, 2008, with an estimated 300 guests in attendance.

The venue would later become the place that Prince Harry tied the knot with Meghan Markle in May 2018, and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank just five months later.

The deal, which was with HELLO! magazine, saw a 100-page special with 59 pages of photographs from the wedding being released. The late Queen featured in 10 of the pictures.

Speaking in a documentary about the scandal, royal expert Simon Vigar said: "Generally, what happens in the private do’s, there are no cameras there, or none of our cameras is there.

"So what happened at Peter and Autumn’s wedding is controversial and unusual. It went down like a lead balloon with many members of the Royal Family.”
