A powerful explosion in the Romanian port of Constanța reported

A sea drone has reportedly exploded in Romania, sending thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky and sparking mass evacuations.

Local reports said the area was isolated and people nearby were evacuated. No casualties were reported.

The Ministry of National Defence states that the drone self-detonated and that it is not part of the Romanian Army's equipment, but is of the type used in the war in Ukraine, local outlet News.Ro said.

Residents told to evacuate

Romanian press agency AGERPRESS said residents received a message telling them to evacuate if they live within a radius of one Km from the port.

Drone 'not part of Romanian Army'

The Ministry of National Defence also said the drone was not part of the Romanian Army’s inventory, and that it had not been involved in recent military exercises in the Black Sea area.

Romania also hit last week

Last week, a drone believed to be Russian struck a high-rise in Romania and injured two people on Thursday night. The drone entered Romanian airspace for four minutes before hitting a block of flats in the city of Galati, triggering radar and land anti-air defences, Romania said.

Explosion at oil terminal

Local reports said the drone exploded near the oil terminal, between two ships. 

The port is currently closed.

'Drone is of the type used in the war in Ukraine'

A spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence said: "The maritime drone is of the type used in the war in Ukraine.

"We would like to clarify that the object is not part of the Romanian Army's equipment and was not involved in the recent exercises organized by the Ministry of Defense in the Black Sea area."

Drone 'self-detonated'

News.Ro said the Ministry of National Defence announced that the maritime drone that was discovered this morning, June 5, in the Constanta Civil Port, near the headquarters of the Romanian Agency for Life Saving at Sea, self-detonated at around 10:30, without causing any casualties.
