The Princess of Wales's hospital data breach has not been referred to police as an expert explains that a "decoy" plan could have been in use - meaning her actual medical files were not accessed by the perpetrators.

Three months on from the royal's hospital stay The London Clinic's investigation continues to rumble on, The Daily Mail has revealed.

Despite Health Minister Maria Caulfield revealing back in March that the police had been asked to look into the data breach, the case has not yet been referred to Scotland Yard.

It was previously alleged that employees at the hospital, where Kate stayed for 13 days back in January for abdominal surgery, attempted to access the Princess of Wales's private medical records - which is a criminal offence.

Several data specialists have now told the Mail that if the breach occurred staff could have been caught through a "decoy" tactic useed by private hospital with high-profile clients.

To protect the clients, private health data is often stored under a fake name along with a "decoy" file, which typically contains false information and is regularly checked to make sure it has not been accessed without permission.

If a breach is found to have taken place, hospitals are required to launch their own enquiry. Whilst this is taking place, the Information Commissioner's Office [ICO] investigates if there was any wrongdoing.

The London Clinic has not provided any update since the suspected breach, with the Metropolitan Police also confirming that they were "not aware of any referral" to them about the case.

Kensington Palace has repeatedly stated: "This is a matter for The London Clinic."

The Princess of Wales has not been publicly seen since Christmas Day in 2023.

The royal then revealed her cancer diagnosis back in March via an emotional video, sharing that the news came as a "shock".

Kate's diagnosis came following post-operative tests from her unrelated surgery two months prior.

As she undergoes cancer treatment Kate has taken a step back from her duties.

She is said to want to attend this year's Trooping the Colour, which takes place on June 15, but is waiting for doctors to give her the green light.

Having recently spoken to Express.co.uk, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams Veteran called a potential appearance from Kate as a "milestone" that would reassure the concerned public that she is on the mend.
