Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are said to only trust one person to care for their children, a royal expert has claimed.

The former royal couple are known to be "extremely protective" of Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, who will celebrate her third birthday next week.

The family of four now reside in a £12 million mansion in California and reportedly moved Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland into their home earlier this year.

According to one source, Meghan and Harry "only stop worrying" about Archie and Lilibet when they are in the care of Doria.

The source, who previously spoke to Express.co.uk, added that Meghan is "more comfortable" when her children are being cared for by her mum than anyone else.

They said: "Meghan feels much more comfortable with the children under her mother’s watchful eye and Harry was very keen to keep it [childcare] in the family.

"Both Harry and Meghan are extremely protective of their children and only stop worrying about them if Doria is in charge whenever they are away.

"Doria was instrumental in looking after Archie and Lilibet when they [Harry and Meghan] were in Nigeria and she treats them like they are her own."

Explaining further, the source added: "Doria spends nearly all of her time with Harry and Meghan. It’s basically a family of five.

"She [Doria] is amazingly close to the children and helps Meghan daily. She also steps in as a nanny whenever they travel abroad without the children."

The couple also reportedly think that it's important that their children are "bought up by family" rather than outside care such as a nanny.

The source dished: "Meghan thought it very important that the children be brought up by family rather than an outsider so they feel safe and secure at all times."

Unlike Meghan and Harry, the Prince and Princess of Wales have had help from Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo since Prince George - now aged 10 - was less than a year old.

Meghan gave birth to Archie, who celebrated his fifth birthday earlier this month, in the UK in 2019.

The couple welcomed Lilibet in June 2021 - the year after they stepped down as senior working royals and moved to the US.
