Sam Smith experienced a horrifying skiing accident at the start of the year, which left them unable to walk and was forced to use a knee brace.

The Unholy singer was seen using a cane in January and it has now been reported that they tore their ACL and had to be rescued from the ski slope.

According to The Sun, Sam shared: “I’ve been really focusing on my mental stuff for the last seven months because I actually broke my ACL.

“I completely ripped my ACL. I was skiing. I was an idiot and went on a black slope on the second day. I got taken down in a blood bag. It was the worst. It’s a permanent thing.”

Sam, who identifies as non-binary, has spent most of the year recovering from their horror accident and revealed that they turned down the option to have surgery.

Speaking on the Sidetracked podcast about the injury, they admitted: “It’s in between your bones and helps you jump and spring around.

“It completely ripped and I decided to go down the non-surgical route but I couldn’t walk for a month on this leg and it was awful.

“It was the first time I’d ever not been able to move and I was holding onto a bit of weight. I was very anxious. I used it as an excuse to get my s**t together.”

The chart-topping star is due to return to the stage next month to perform at the BBC Proms. Bosses have insisted that Sam's performance will be "appropriate", amid widespread complaints of their BRIT Award's performance last year.

Sam's live performances have recently gained a reputation for sexualised choreography and unusual costumes. However, Radio 3 director Sam Jackson has explicitly clarified that ticker-goers do not have to worry.

In a statement, he said: "I think what you’ll see is a performance that is entirely appropriate for the Proms and entirely appropriate for the audience in attendance. The focus will be on Sam Smith and their music and there will be a focus on the unique orchestral arrangement, and the fact that this will be the only opportunity to see Sam Smith in the UK this year."

He added: “This is very much a Prom – it’s not Sam Smith at the Royal Albert Hall. The look and feel will be entirely appropriate for that festival.” In contrast, the 31-year-old's BRIT Awards performance last year, featuring their single 'Unholy', caused concern for some.
