BBC Radio 2 presenter Tina Daheley paid an emotional tribute to Monty Don.

The Gardeners' World star was showered with love on his 69th birthday after a surprise cake made an appearance during his show at Kew The Music festival.

While gracing the stage at London's Kew Gardens for his 'In Conversation With' appearance on Monday night (July 8), Monty was in for a treat, courtesy of newsreader Tina.

The event turned into a mini-birthday bash as Tina brought him a special cake, made by the The Botanical Brasserie at Kew. The beloved gardener was delighted as thousands of attendees began singing happy birthday.

Ahead of the event, Monty gave fans a sneak peek into his less-than-luxurious dressing room via Instagram, with a rather down-to-earth advisory caption of: "The latest in my series of glamorous dressing rooms - getting set for tonight's show at Kew the Music (bring wellies, waterproofs and umbrellas)."

Fans immediately inundated his feed with warm birthday wishes, but also pointed out the stark absence of any festive treats or decorations. One wrote: "Close your eyes and think of your beautiful dogs and garden. Happy Birthday Monty. Keep out of the rain."

A second penned: "I hope you can have a birthday celebration after the show. It doesn’t look very inviting..." Another added: "Not a cake in sight? Happy Birthday Monty!"

A fourth commented: "Happy birthday!! They could have had a plant in the room. Best wishes." Someone else agreed: "I hope that you've had the happiest of days. That's the longest clothes rail & ugliest corridor I've ever seen."

It comes after Monty left fans concerned as he shared a snap of his dog playing with a ball. The horticulturist often shares photos of his dogs; Ned and Patti, around his home and accompanying him in the garden.

On Monday (July 8), Monty posted an up-close shot of Ned on Instagram with a tennis ball in his mouth and wrote: "Ecstatic Ned with his new unbirthday ball."

As well as birthday wishes, Monty's comments were filled with concerned messages from fans, who shared their worry that the pup could choke on the ball.

One warned: "Hi Monty, just a quickie to say, my friend’s dog ball got lodged in his throat. She tried in vain to get it out, sadly to no avail. I would suggest a more giant ball, which is so beautiful Ned can’t choke."

Another replied: "Yes, I thought the same. Our cousin’s dog just died this week, the ball lodged in the throat. Horrible. Freak accident but more common than one may realise."
