BBC Breakfast: Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell open Wednesday's show

BBC Breakfast viewers issued the same demand as Sally Nugent remained absent from the programme.

Sally, 52, usually hosts BBC Breakfast from Monday to Wednesday with Jon Kay, but has been absent for the third time this week. Sarah Campbell stepped in for Sally once again on Wednesday (July 10), sharing the latest headlines alongside Jon, 54.

Viewers welcomed Sarah's presence on the red sofa and even took to social media to issue a demand about making her more permanent.

One wrote: "Great to see the temporary female presenter, used to do royal work, @BBCBreakfast provide such a natural and peaceful role with john kaye. Hope she can continue as first backup #BBCBreakfast."

"Yeah, Sarah is great," agreed a second. Echoing this, another declared: "Have to say how much better #bbcbreakfast is with Sarah Campbell instead of Sally Nugent."

Someone else added: "Nice to see Sarah on the red sofa. A real breath of fresh air. A good journalist and presenter. Show needs an injection of good presenters like Charlie and Naga."

Sally's disappearance comes shortly after her coverage of the UK's General Election last week. Just like her colleague Naga Munchetty, Sally was offering viewers further insight as the votes came in on Thursday night (July 4).

Sally presented from Sunderland place, while her BBC co-stars Clive Myrie and Laura Keunssberg led proceedings back in the studio.

The presenter also took a short break from BBC Breakfast in late June, with Sarah on hand to replace her once again.

Coinciding with an emotional update about the programme, Jon addressed his co-star's absence on social media. He shared a selfie of himself in the Salford studio alongside Sarah, revealing it had been one year since they moved into their new filming spot.

Jon wrote in the caption: "Good morning from your BBC Breakfast team. Lovely to have Sarah with us - covering for Sally this week. It was exactly a year ago today that we moved into our lovely new studio.

"Over the last twelve months our team has interviewed hundreds of guests on the sofa, covered thousands of stories and last month welcomed the BBC News at One to join us in Salford. Happy Birthday studio!"
