Shelvey thinks training with Benitez is like being on trial
Benitez was appointed less than two weeks ago after Steve McClaren was sacked with the club 19th in the Premier League table.
And Shelvey, who himself only arrived at the club from Swansea in January, has admitted that training has had an extra edge since the Spaniard has taken over.
“You’re always being watched - you feel like you’re on trial if you like,” Shelvey told BBCNewcastle.
“(The break) will be a good chance to really knuckle down.
“We’ve not had much time since he’s come in because everything has been a bit rushed.
“Rafa will come up with a gameplan because that’s what he does.
“I’m sure we’ll go to Norwich and give a very good account of ourselves.”
