Man Utd 'make decision' on Erik ten Hag transfer power as Omar Berrada gets his own way

Man Utd have decided on Erik ten Hag's transfer power under the INEOS regime.

Erik ten Hag will retain his veto over all transfers at Manchester United as part of his new contract despite INEOS' new-look recruitment team, according to reports. The Dutchman was handed considerable power over signings when he arrived at Old Trafford in 2022 but has enjoyed drastically mixed success.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe wasted no time overseeing an upheaval of club staff after completing his investment in the club in February, which many thought would include replacing Ten Hag.

The departures of chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough - his two closest links to the hierarchy - intensified speculation about his future.

United opted against sacking Ten Hag, and he is instead expected to pen a new contract that will extend beyond his current 2025 expiry.

But the arrivals of chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, technical director Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell have hinted at a change in transfer strategy.

The change of model has brought Ten Hag's authority over the players he will add to his squad into serious question, considering the number of specialists now in place.

However, The Athletic report that he will keep a crucial vote on any incoming players and won't be handed any additions who he didn't previously agree on.

That's not to say Ten Hag will have as much power under INEOS as he has enjoyed across his first two years at United, though.

Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford have prioritised forming an upgraded recruitment set-up for a reason, and all four new figures will have significant involvement.

Vivell's impending appointment has hammered home INEOS' eagerness to transform United's fortunes in the transfer market.

The report adds that he was selected by Berrada, who is also thought to have contributed to securing Ashworth and Wilcox's expertise.

Vivell will likely specialise in talent ID, providing his insight on targets United identify before they step up their interest.

Wilcox will work in "all technical areas of the football department" and offer a strong link between the club's higher-ups and playing staff.

Ashworth's role will be the most important aspect of the sporting side of operations at Old Trafford after finally completing his move.

He will oversee everything to push greater performance on the pitch, from the academy to the women's team to the men's side.

But Berrada will inherit the keys to the corporate and sporting sides of the club when he lands in M16 on July 13, and Ten Hag will have to work in unison with him and the other three executives.
