Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may even get to keep Edinson Cavani for another year yet, so a new striker is not necessarily his priority.
The Uruguayan has a two-year contract on the table from Boca Juniors but is taking his time to decide his future.
Should he wish to return to South America, United are expected to target a new No 9.
Solskjaer of course worked with Haaland at Molde, where he brought him into the first-team set up before his move to RB Salzburg.
The United boss has admitted on several occasions that he remains in contact with his former player.

It's Manchester City and Chelsea that pose the biggest threat to United's pursuit of Haaland, though.
City are in the market for a replacement for Sergio Aguero and look prepared to spend over £100m on a player for the first time in their history.
Haaland's father Alf-Inge also represented the club during his playing days and Manchester holds a special place in the family's hearts.
Chelsea are expected to go after a new striker too following the struggles of Timo Werner.
Roman Abramovich is believed to be a big fan of Haaland and could break the bank to bring him to west London.
