Manchester United senior figures believe Morgan Schneiderlin was a signing who lacked the ‘X-Factor’ in order to succeed at Old Trafford. The Red Devils signed the France international from Southampton in 2015 back when Louis van Gaal ruled the roost.
Manchester United thought they were onto a winner when they lured Schneiderlin to Old Trafford five years ago.
The France international had flourished for Southampton, becoming one of the first names on the team sheet under Mauricio Pochettino.
North London duo Tottenham and Arsenal both rated him highly and were left gutted when United stole a march and brought him to Manchester instead.
However, the 30-year-old never lived up to expectations during his time at the Red Devils.
Van Gaal was disappointed by his new recruit, who he’d hoped would strike up a formidable relationship with Bastian Schweinsteiger in the middle of the park.
And the Manchester Evening News say senior club figures believe the Frenchman lacked the ‘X-Factor’ required to succeed at the club.

But he, too, couldn’t deliver and was also sold by Mourinho in January 2017.
Meanwhile, speaking back in October, Schneiderlin opened up on his time at United.
And he admitted that he had regrets at leaving the club so quickly after his arrival, only starting 25 games before departing.
“I wanted to do more and I had the capacity to do more," he admitted in an interview with BBC Radio 5Live.
“Maybe I jumped out of the boat too quickly when I didn’t play for three months.
“When I look at other players having a great career at Manchester United , they all had a spell of four or five months when they didn’t play.”

Schneiderin also expressed a belief that he was misunderstood by fans.
"Some people say I pass square but I don't see it,” he added.
“Look at [Sergio] Busquets at Barcelona. I don't compare myself to him but tell me the passes he does that I don't? Because they win games everyone says he's the cleverest midfielder in football. I don't compare myself to Busquets.
"Football is about perception.
“You can play the same game but it will be analysed differently depending on whether you have won or lost."
