Gedson Fernandes: Midfielder trains with Benfica squad
Tottenham may be about to agree terms on a deal for Gedson Fernandes, but Jamie Carragher insists Jose Mourinho has a lot to do in the transfer market to rebuild the squad. Spurs established themselves as a perennial Champions League club under Mauricio Pochettino and have also been in contention in the Premier League in recent years.
But the club have failed to build upon that this campaign with Pochettino getting the sack back in November with the club sitting 14th in the table.
Mourinho has since been drafted in and they have moved back up to eighth in the table but they still remain nine points adrift of the Champions League places.
And Mourinho’s task was made that bit worse after news of Harry Kane’s injury ruling him out until April.
The club have reacted by closing in on a deal to sign Fernandes with reports claiming the 21-year-old was undergoing a medical today.

But Carragher believes Mourinho will need to backed by Daniel Levy in the summer transfer window to completely overhaul the squad.
“There will have to be major changes in the summer for Tottenham," Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“Pochettino was one or two players away, I think, from winning the league.
“I think Jose Mourinho's team he has got now, if he is looking to play the way he wants to play, which is not the way these players are used to playing, needs four or five players just to get back to where Pochettino was, never mind actually getting to where Tottenham want to get."
Part of the reason Carragher believes Tottenham will need a number of new signings is the summer is due to the tactical difference between Mourinho and Pochettino.
“I’ve loved watching Mourinho, I hate the fact that every team wants to play the same way," Carragher added.
“But Tottenham were a team who pressed from the front with energy, who played from the back.
“Those two big things from the Pochettino era have gone now with Jose Mourinho.
