Pick of the day: Battle Scarred: Soldiers Behind Bars
10pm, Channel 5
Each year up to 20,000 military personnel leave the Armed Forces. For most the return to civilian life is straightforward but for others it is overwhelming.
In this four-part series, Emmy Award-winning journalist Chris Terrill looks at the growing number of ex-servicemen who are ending up behind bars, mostly for violent crime.
Perhaps inevitably, given their numbers, military veterans now constitute the largest occupational group in British jails.
Travelling to two of Scotland’s most notorious prisons, Terrill meets a number of ex-servicemen guilty of serious violent crimes, including Darren, an 18-year-old who is now serving three years for putting someone into a coma after a street fight, and Mickey, 30, who is doing 18 years for shooting a passenger in his car.
