The latest instalment of The Batman franchise is finally here as The Penguin premieres in the UK. Starring Colin Farell as the titular mobster, the new DC Studios drama is a continuation of Matt Reeves’ 2022 reboot The Batman, which saw Robert Pattinson don the infamous cowl as the Dark Knight.

The Penguin picks up after the film, with Gotham City flooded by The Riddler and crime boss Carmine Falcone assassinated. It follows Oswald ‘Oz’ Cobb – Falcone’s former lieutenant – as attempts to become the kingpin of Gotham’s underworld.

Things are complicated by the return of Falcone’s daughter Sofia (Cristin Milioti), back in Gotham after a stint in Arkham Asylum and staking her claim at the head of the table. The eight-part series is executive produced by The Batman writer-director Reeves, alongside Dylan Clark, Colin Farrell and Lauren LeFranc, who also serves as writer and showrunner.

The series debuted with a Certified Fresh 88 percent Rotten Tomatoes score after 77 reviews. Empire said The Penguin delivers a ‘well-paced and pleasingly unpredictable story’ that feels both ‘necessary and earned’, while The Observer hailed it as a ‘riveting, stylish and fun-as-hell gangster drama’.

The Penguin has become one the most iconic villains from Batman’s rogues gallery since his first appearance in a 1941 edition of DC’s Detective Comics series. He is played by an unrecognisable Farrell in this iteration, who transforms into the character with the help of stunning prosthetics.

He stars alongside How I Met Your Mother actress Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone – the daughter of the late crime lord Carmine Falcone – with Michael Zegen, Clancy Brown, Rhenzy Feliz and Michael Kelly rounding out the cast. So if you’re ready to head back to Gotham, here’s how you can watch The Penguin without paying a penny.
