Oscars viewers were left furious after comedian Kumail Nanjiani made an “antisemitic” joke about Schindler’s List while presenting the aware for Best Live Action Short. As Nanjiani announced it was a tie between two winners, who would both take home a gong in the same category, he joked that other films could be shortened to make them quicker to watch.

Among the films he referenced were The King’s Speech, which he joked could be ‘The King’s Tweets’; One Battle After Another, which could be ‘One Battle’; and Schindler’s List, which he quipped would be ‘Schindler’s Post-It’. However, with the ongoing political climate regarding Israel and Palestine, some viewers found the joke in bad taste.

Taking to social media, one said: “That was a CHEAP leftist antisemitic comment by Kumail Nanjiani – Schindler’s Post-It. Don’t invite him back.”

Another agreed: “A list isn’t a form of stationery, so ‘Schindler’s Post-It’ doesn’t make any sense. Bad joke.”

Someone else posted: "Can't say that Schindler's List joke was uh in any good taste!"

And a fourth echoed: "Why the f*** would you make a joke about short films: 'Schindler's Post-it'?" while a fifth viewer said: "What a great Oscars ceremony Award for short films introduction joked about making long films shorter eg: included the joke 'Schindler's Post-It'. How the f*** can they let this shit out? Who paid for that?"

Other viewers, however, praised Nanjiani for how he handled the issue of a tie in the category he was announcing.

One said: "Kumail Nanjiani is very funny. Well-delivered bit in the beginning, and then good on his feet."

As another agreed: "Everything should always be hosted by Conan O’Brien and every category should be presented by Kumail Nanjiani. Him handling that tie was so funny."

Express.co.uk has contacted Nanjiani's representatives for comment.
