Coronation Street’s Daniel Brocklebank has teased that things are set to take a dark turn for his character Billy Mayhew, following the death of Paul Foreman.

Actor Daniel has played beloved vicar Billy since 2014, and has become a firm favourite with fans. Over the years, he’s been involved in several big storylines too - from drug addiction to even murder.

However, over in the soap recently, Billy has been at the heart of a heartbreaking MND storyline. Fans will recall Billy’s husband Paul (Peter Foreman) was diagnosed with MND late last year.

And during Monday’s emotional episode (September 9), Paul took his final breath in heartbreaking scenes.

Earlier on in the episode, in a bid to find his phone, Billy left Paul with mum Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) and Summer (Harriet Bibby). Things took a dramatic turn though, when Paul was unable to breathe.

Panic soon set in for Bernie and Summer who called an ambulance that rushed Paul to the hospital. Meanwhile, Billy was none the wiser as nobody could get in touch with him.

However, after finally setting up his new phone, Billy discovered that Paul was hospitalised and was dying. In a race against time, Billy sprinted to the hospital - but, he was too late.

Paul sadly died with Summer, Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Bernie beside him. However, in a heartbreaking twist, when Billy called up Bernie she lied that Paul was still alive, so he could say his goodbyes, not knowing he was already dead.

When asked how he would cope if he ever found out about Bernie’s lie that Paul heard his message, Daniel said: “I think it’s the only thing really that’s stopping him from tipping off the edge.

“He feels terribly guilty that he wasn’t there, and it’s the only thing really holding him together,” he added.

When asked if he could go off to the rails again, Daniel said: “Hopefully not to the heroin extent! He did go off the rails a little bit, but hopefully not to shooting up in the aisle of a church extent as we saw it before.” The actor added: “Billy’s good in a crisis if it’s not his crisis.”
