Actor Callum Woodhouse has spoken openly about his return to Channel 5's All Creatures Great and Small ahead of the new series.

The 30-year-old is set to reprise his role as Tristan Farnon in the much-loved series which will return to screens on Thursday (September 19). But the star questioned whether he would feel "weird" returning to his role after quite some time away.

He said candidly: "It was always the plan to come back, and historically, Tristan did go away to war for a while, and he did come back. But yes, it was really nice to take the time away to do other projects and then come back home to my family really.

"It was slightly daunting in the sense of, 'Is it going to feel weird? Am I going to feel a bit out of the loop?' but my first day back was a full day in the in The Drovers, which is probably the best place to film Tristan’s first scenes back."

Reflecting on how his scenes were filmed he added: "I remember coming back, we did the morning and warmed into it, and then coming back after our lunch break it didn’t feel like I’d been away at all to be honest.

"I just slotted back in so comfortably and so well and was having all of the same banter and jokes with all of the same cast and crew that’s still with us from series one. Yes, it was just really lovely."

When asked if he enjoyed wearing his army-inspired costume throughout the fifth series, Callum admitted to finding the experience rather delightful.

He said: "It was very nice to spend lots of time this year in the army uniform. I really enjoyed that. It’s a great costume, and I really enjoyed being in it and it helps me feel the part.

He added: "Obviously, it’s one thing just having a shirt and trousers on, but you’ve got all these leather belts that strap you into the uniform, and the hats as well. When you’re stood in a row of people who are all wearing tweed suits and lovely ties and you’re stood there in a bright green army uniform, you do feel separate to them.

"But in a good way, if that makes sense. So minimal tank top wearing for Tris this year!"

Fans of the Channel 5 show will know Tristan last appeared in season three, with the character leaving Darrowby to serve in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. Although his presence was missed in series four, it allowed the actor to venture into other projects.

During his time away, Callum worked on the horror film. One of US.

All Creatures Great and Small returns to Channel 5 on Thursday September 19 at 9pm.
