Outlander fans left baffled by plot hole as major storyline ‘disappears’ after huge twist

One of Outlander's most iconic adversaries apparently disappeared back in season four, leaving fans of the hit Starz drama completely baffled.

Outlander fans have pointed out a huge plot hole in the series as a storyline involving one of Claire Fraser’s (played by Caitriona Balfe) primary antagonists has apparently never been mentioned again.

Back in season three, Claire faces off against Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek), a fellow time-traveller who wants to enact the Fraser prophecy which states a Scottish king will eventually wear the crown.

She sets her sights on Claire’s daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton), who was born 200 years after she was conceived thanks to her mother’s century-hopping, but thankfully fails in her quest.

Geillis was killed at the end of season three, but some viewers of the popular Starz drama are confused as to why the prophecy hasn’t been brought up again.

"When twice 1,200 moons have coursed, ‘tween man’s attack and woman’s curse, and when the issue is cut down, then will a Scotsman wear a crown,” it says.

But, for a plot point that seemed so important during Outlander’s earlier years, why hasn’t been given so much as a mention since Claire and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) have moved to North Carolina?

Taking to Reddit, one critical fan wrote: “So the last episode of season 3 Geillis wanted to go back through the stones to kill Brianna because she's the 200-year-old baby or whatever.

“But I'm just starting episode 4 of season 4 and that has not been mentioned again.

“Does it come back or was it just like 'wow this here this is a plot line' and then it just died?”

In order to clear up the issue, another viewer who has also made their way through Diana Gabaldon’s original books replied: “Claire killed Geillis in the cave.

“Brianna is now safe from Geillis. Ian, Jamie & Claire get away. Through a long series of events they end up in America. Result … end of storyline - beginning of next.”

Claire, Jamie and Young Ian Murray (John Bell) now have the American Revolution to contend with, so they’ve been a little preoccupied to spend their time musing over old prophecies.

Even so, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating what could have been, with another replying: “I keep wondering if it would have been more compelling if there was more ground to the connection from the death of Bree to the rising of the Scottish king.

“For me it was kind of random to believe that course of events just because a seer said so. Of course Geillis would believe it, the fanatic that she is. But the time from the revelation of the prophecy to it taking a full nosedive left me confused, if anything.”

To which the original poster replied: “It really did just come from absolutely nowhere I was so confused.”

Although the narrative of Outlander has since moved on, the midseason finale saw Claire and Jamie finally return to Scotland, so the Fraser prophecy could come into play again.

Moreover, actress Lotte is reportedly reprising her role as Geillis in the second half of season seven, which could be an opportunity for the series to tie up some loose ends.

Outlander season 7, part 2 premieres Sunday, November 22 on Starz.
