BH: Red team advised to make 'groundbreaking' purchase

Bargain Hunt host Eric Knowles was left speechless when he discovered what item a team had brought to try and make a profit.

During Monday’s episode of the BBC show, viewers saw mother and daughter duo Daiana and Nadia keen to find odd and unusual items to sell at auction.

While exploring the antiques centre with their expert Philip Serrell, he noticed something on the floor which caught his attention.

Looking at the floor, he asked the red team: “Do you want to buy something daft?”

As the two women tried to guess what it was that Philip was so interested in, he explained the two pieces of cast iron were used to hold tracks on a railway line.

Curious to know if it would sell, he told them people collect railway memorabilia

He said: “I’m willing to bet you that no one on Bargain Hunt, in the 23 years that it’s been on television, has ever brought a thing that holds a railway line in place. Do you want to be groundbreakers?”

Originally, they were being sold for £45 but after some haggling, they managed to get them for £38 for both of them.

However, when BBC host Eric Knowles took the railway base to auctioneer Ashley Jones, he wasn’t so sure about it.

Introducing the piece, he said: “The likes of which I’ve never seen sold at an auction.

“It’s the ultimate paperweight really, isn’t it?”

The auctioneer revealed they believed the odd item could sell anywhere between £30 to £50.

Sadly, when it came down to the bidding it seemed as though people weren’t as blown away by the railway base as Philip had hoped.

Starting off at £30 offers failed to come in as Ashley was forced to lower the price.

The price quickly dropped to £5, which one man in the room decided to bid as there was little to no interest.

Although the red team weren’t too disheartened by the flop, their expert seemed less than impressed.

In the end, the red team failed to make a profit as the blue team walked away with a profit of £5.

Despite buying an item which hadn’t ever been seen on the BBC show before, they ended up with minus 63.

Bargain Hunt is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
