BBC Breakfast: Ben and Sally Nugent interview Rishi Sunak

Fans of BBC Breakfast slammed the presenters for a "car crash" interview with Rishi Sunak on Tuesday morning. Presenters Sally Nugent and Ben Thompson were at the helm of the show as they welcomed the Prime Minister on to discuss the Conservative plans for if they are triumphant in the General Election on July 4.

Mr Sunak appeared via video link as he stood in what appeared to be a crisp aisle in a supermarket. Presenter Ben Thompson addressed the Prime Minister's unusual surroundings as he said: "You appear to be in a supermarket, this morning, Mr Sunak and you've been meeting all sorts of people out on your campaign.

"One of the things they talk to you a lot about as well is the cost of living crisis." The BBC Breakfast host then challenged the Tory leader as he asked him how much a loaf of bread costs. He said: "Do you know how much a loaf of bread costs?"

Mr Sunak replied: "I do actually." He added: "It's about £1.35 for the best selling that Morrisons sell."

Later, Ben challenged him once more as he then asked how much the price of bread has gone up in the last five years. The Prime Minister became flakey and said he didn't have the figure to hand.

Ben and Sally let Mr Sunak continue to talk about inflation and cutting taxes, without interruption. Eventually Ben updated him as he said: "It's actually gone up by 28%, according to RNS."

As the interview came to an end, fans on X (formerly Twitter) bashed the presenters for not grilling the PM enough. One user wrote: "@BBCBreakfast What a car crash interview with the PM.

"Allowed him to spew lies out without any comeback. Weak questioning and let him talk all over their questions. No wonder he won't go on Good Morning Breakfast to be interviewed @GMB."

Another added: "Jesus,Mary & Joseph #RishiSunak car crash on #BBCBreakfast love how asked what has been best moment as PM, clearly he has zero chance of still being MP on Thursday!!!"

Meanwhile, other viewers at home questioned the Prime Minister's unusual interview location. One wrote: "Why is Sunak hanging out in the crisp aisle? Imagine bumping into him while you’re trying to grab some wotsits for breakfast. I’d trust the pickled onion breath that comes out my mouth after 3 bags of monster munch more than I would anything he says. #BBCBreakfast"

Another added: "Genius Sunak is starting today’s campaign in a supermarket in Oxfordshire, reminding folk about the cost of living crisis. #BBCBreakfast."

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays from 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
