Following the tragic passing of character Ethan Anderson, Emmerdale's Ruby Fox-Miligan decided it was time to take responsibility for her actions. Yet viewers can't shake the feeling there's a further plot twist yet to come.

The troubled soul, played by Beth Cordingly, accidently hit Ethan with her car back in May, and not long after, he suffered a fatal collapse at home just prior to his court appearance over a drink-driving incident. He was only 28 years old.

Ethan's distraught father Charles has been a shadow of his former self ever since, even as Ruby tries to provide support to him and his significant other, Manpreet Sharma. Unfortunately, Ruby's son Nicky - played by Lewis Cope - did not appreciate her interfering ways during Wednesday's episode.

Burdened by her guilt and seeing how much Charles was suffering, Ruby promised Nicky she'd hand herself into the police, scared of losing him permanently.

Meanwhile, viewers on their sofas could sense a further twist looming. The real cause of Ethan's death hasn't been confirmed and while many fans believe that it could be because of the injuries sustained from his accident, some think that there might be more going on, reports the Mirror.

Audiences of the beloved Yorkshire drama took to Twitter to express their thoughts. "It's surely going to turn out it wasn't Rubys fault has cause of death been told", posted an astute fan.

Another viewer speculated: "I bet Ruby confesses then it turns out running him over had nothing to do with his death! ! ", while a third chimed in, predicting another plot twist and hinting at a possible escape: "Ruby's not going to hand herself in, she's got two storylines on the go. It'll be an underlying heart condition, she'll be off the hook, Charles will have a little cry snap out of it and they'll all be down the pub, ready for the next pile of sh*** episode."

Meanwhile, another fan humorously agreed that Ruby's jail time seemed unlikely: "Ruby is going to run."

With her on-screen son Nicky poised to exit the village soon, could this spell further drama?

In a dramatic turn of events, Ruby took drastic measures upon learning that Ethan was responsible for Nicky ending up in a coma following a drink-fuelled car accident. Last month saw the two men attempting to reach Nicky's partner Suni Sharma (Brahmdeo Shannon Ramana) after having a few drinks.

Ethan, who was driving at the time, fled the crash site, leaving Nicky critically injured. Overwhelmed by remorse, he confessed to his father Charles, only to be shocked when Charles reported him to the police.

Emmerdale airs on ITV at 7:30pm on weekdays.
