Coronation Street fans turn against Roy Cropper after he commits ultimate betrayal

Coronation Street fans previously consistently asked for justice for Roy Cropper as he languishes in jail for a crime no one believes he committed.

In dramatic Coronation Street scenes that aired this week, Roy Cropper (played by David Neilson) landed Bobby Crawford (Jack Carroll) in trouble for trying to give him a false alibi. After spilling all to the police in a loose-lipped interview and being sternly told he's "lucky" not to be facing charges of perverting the course of justice, officers acted on his words and arrested Bobby.

He'd falsely claimed he'd seen another man behaving suspiciously in a desperate bid to free Roy - whom he believes to be innocent in the Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) murder investigation. Roy then fought the kind gesture on Wednesday night, firing back: "I cannot abide the idea that I could be freed on false evidence!"

However, he became increasingly desperate after realising: "Bobby's statement is the only evidence in my defence!" Viewers took to Twitter to share their fury at Roy as they blasted him for needlessly incriminating his friend.

"That's it, Roy. Drop Bobby in it. Who'd want a friend like Roy? #Corrie," quizzed one angry fan. "You deserve to go down, Roy. You're not helping yourself," a second fumed.

A third jokingly chimed in: "Roy, snitches get stitches #corrie." Those are just a few of a large number of angry tweets that have been circulating among those convinced that Roy has committed the ultimate betrayal.

Coronation Street: Roy tells the truth about false evidence given by Bobby

While being interviewed about the fake testimony, he realised his friendship with Carla Connor (Alison King) could be at stake, due to her close connections with Bobby.

Besides that, he'd already suggested he no longer wants to see her.

Viewers were on the edges of their seats as they witnessed him admit: "Perhaps I truly have lost my friend."

However, Roy still has some loyal supporters, with one taking to Twitter to say that his plight was "tugging at my heartstrings".

Another exclaimed: "Roy doing the right thing, being honest about Creepy [Bobby]. He shouldn’t have been let go, he should be rotting away in a cell for perverting the course of justice!"

"Roy would much sooner hang, than get a decent friend tell a white lie for him (sic)," wrote a third.

Meanwhile, the hunt is on for Lauren's killer, with the truth set to be discovered sooner than viewers might think.

Yesterday, viewers thought they'd identified Nathan Curtis' (Christopher Harper's) lawyer Joel Deering as the culprit (played by Calum Lill), while, to complicate matters further, he is dating Roy's lawyer, Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown).

Coronation Street usually airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and ITVX - but also screens tonight at 7:30pm.
