BBC Breakfast: Charlie Stayt sums up May weather in one word

BBC Breakfast's Naga Munchetty couldn't resist taking a swipe at her co-presenter Charlie Stayt on Thursday's (May 30) edition of the show. The opportunity arose when weather presenter Simon King asked both hosts how they would sum up May's weather.

Without hesitation, Naga responded: "Mild and wet." Simon felt this was pretty accurate, saying: "Mild and wet - yeah pretty good."

However, Charlie was less decisive. "I’d say mixed," he replied. This led Naga to laugh: "Oh, not sitting on the fence at all there Charlie!"

Simon then asked if they would be surprised to learn that May was one of the warmest on record. Naga answered in the negative, saying: "No it wouldn’t surprise me. It’s felt really, kind of, mild."

This revelation comes after it has been predicted that the UK is going to have one of the wettest summers on record, with 50 days of constant rainfall expected.

Should the rain hit for 50 days, it would make it the wettest summer since 1912, when Britain was battered by rain for 55 days during the same period.

Last year reportedly saw rain fall for 40 days over the summer months. In order to count towards the rainy day tally, there must be more than 2.5 mm or more in a 24-hour period.

The Met Office long-range forecast said: “The chances of a wetter-than-average period are higher than a drier-than-average one.

“Rainfall at this time of year has a greater risk of localised heavy downpours and thunderstorms.”

The soggy outlook came after much of the UK was hit by wet weather over the course of the Bank Holiday weekend.

Elsewhere on the programme, viewers slammed the show and accused it of "slipping into Loose Women territory" following a feature about guided tours of Harry Styles hometown.

Charlie and Naga interviewed guides who show tourists around the Harry-themed hotspots of the area, after airing a film dedicated to the tours.

Harry's hometown of Holmes Chapel in Chesire has been taken over by tourists since the Watermelon Sugar singer shot to fame in One Direction, with fans travelling from around the world to pay homage to the singer. They take in sights associated with him, including the bakery where he worked before he found fame.

BBC Breakfast is on BBC One daily at 6am.
