Britain looks set to be hit by the soggiest summer in over 100 years with forecasters predicting there could be 50 days of rain in the next three months.

According to The Sun, the Met Office has briefed the Government and transport chiefs so they can prepare for wet conditions and traffic during the holidays.

Should the rain hit for 50 days, it would make it the wettest summer since 1912, when Britain was battered by rain for 55 days of summer.

Last year reportedly saw rain for 40 days over summer. In order to count towards the rainy day tally, there must be more than 2.5 mm or more in a 24-hour preiod.

The Sun says forecasters believe the wet outlook for summer will be down to low pressure systems.

The Met Office long-range forecast said: “The chances of a wetter-than-average period are higher than a drier-than-average one.

“Rainfall at this time of year has a greater risk of localised heavy downpours and thunderstorms.”

The soggy outlook comes after much of the UK was hit by wet weather of the Bank Holiday weekend.
