'Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes' chilling trailer
Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes on Netflix ends with the revelation that Ted Bundy confessed to some of his crimes just days before he was executed. Netflix viewers, have been looking for more information on Ted Bundy's confession and which murders he confessed to. Ted Bundy chose to confess to a number of his murders to people like Bill Hagmaier a few days before his death, though also falsely confessed to a number of other murders to confuse the police.
Did Ted Bundy ever confess?
Ted Bundy confessed to 30 murders in interviews just before his death in January 1989.
However, he did not confess until a few days before he was executed by electric chair and some think he lied about some of his crimes to confound the police’s efforts to find the bodies of his victims.
Though he confessed to 30 killings, some true crime aficionados think he may have committed as many as 100 murders.
In The Ted Bundy Tapes, Bundy speaks to journalist Stephen Michaud, who struggles to get the serial killer to talk in the early episodes of the documentary.
However, the journalist then tries a new strategy to get Bundy to essentially confess to his crimes.
He does not ask him what he did, but instead what he would have done if he had killed his victims.
However, he only fully confessed to his crimes to the police in a series of meetings with law authorities a few days before he was killed by the electric chair.
Of these, the most reported murder is one that took place in Salt Lake City, Utah.
According to an article by ABC4: “Bundy was to be executed January 24, 1989 in a Florida prison for the murders of two co-eds and a 12-year-old girl.
“Utah law enforcement wanted confessions and more importantly locations of the young women who vanished and killed.”
This interview with homicide detective Dennis Couch saw Bundy confess to the murders of eight Utah residents - though three of these have since been debunked.
The interview was recorded, and on the tapes, you can hear Ted Bundy confessing, like in the following exchange reported by ABC4:
Couch: "Was she killed right there at the school?”
Bundy: “No.”
Couch: "But you are responsible for her death?”
Bundy: “Yes."
He also confessed to further murders to law enforcement officer Robert Keppel, to whom he had previously written to in order to help find another serial killer.
Bundy is quoted as telling Keppel: “We serial killers are your sons, we are your husbands, we are everywhere.
“And there will be more of your children dead tomorrow.”
