A Caribbean cruise voyage descended into mayhem before the ship had even left the port.

Furious passengers on board a Carnival Cruise trip started chanting and confronting staff after it was announced that their dream vacation required a last-minute itinerary change.

The Carnival Vista voyage, which costs nearly $800 (£610), was set to embark on an eight-night Southern Caribbean cruise leaving Port Canaveral, Florida on August 10.

However, while passengers were still boarding the cruise liner, staff announced a dramatic change in stops. Passengers who had anticipated stops in Aruba, Curacao, and Turks and Caicos were told they'd be visiting Nassau, Princess Cays, Freeport, and Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.

Carnival crew members told passengers that they had discovered a “technical issue affecting the ship’s cruising speed” which forced the cruise line to alter the itinerary.

This sparked chaos on board, with passengers filmed shouting at staff and pleading to get off the ship.

One video, shared by Instagram user Only In Florida this week, showed several guests abroad chanting: "Give us our money!"

In the video, a staff member can be heard telling guests: “Ladies and gentlemen, the way you’re going about this with the noise and chaos isn’t going to solve any issues."

One guest Ashley Ball later told Inside Edition: “They knew about the problem prior to us getting onto the ship.

"They just didn’t say that until we were already on the ship, and, you know, went through customs and the lines and securities and all that, and then decided to display that information.”

Carnival Cruises said that guests were given two options as they sought to calm the melee.

A spokesperson said: “Those that sailed were given an onboard credit as well as a future cruise credit toward another cruise to make up for the unexpected change, and those who preferred not to sail were offered a 100 percent refund.”

In a message to guests, they added: "We apologise for this unanticipated disruption to your vacation plans and are disappointed that we will not be able to deliver the cruise we had planned."
