An AK-47 with a scope, a GoPro and two backpacks were recovered from the scene of a suspected assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Florida.

Secret Service agents opened fire on a person poking a long rifle through a fence line at Trump's West Palm Beach golf club at around 1.30pm ET today.

In a press conference at 5pm, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the suspect was apprehended on I-95 after being spotted running out of bushes and jumping into a black Nissan SUV.

"After that we took the witness and he identified him as the person seen running out of the bushes and jumping into a car," Bradshaw said.

The GoPro was attached to the other side of the fence and investigators believe this was to film an assassination attempt. The suspect was about 400 yards to 500 yards away from Trump and hiding in shrubbery as the former President played golf on a nearby hole.

The FBI said it is investigating “what appears to be an attempted assassination.”

Breaking his silence shortly after, Trump said in an email to fundraisers "gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!"

“Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!” he added.

The disturbing incident at Trump International Golf Club comes amid an ongoing investigation into a July 13 assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

DON'T MISS:

The golf course was partially shut down for Trump as he played and agents were a few holes ahead of him when they noticed the firearm poking through a fence, Bradshaw said.

Golfers are visible from the fence line at several areas around the perimeter of the property.

When Trump golfs, agents in golf carts usually secure the area several holes ahead as a precaution.

An armored vehicle is usually brought onto the course to quickly shelter Trump should a threat arise.

The Republican was in Florida this weekend after a Friday night rally in Las Vegas. His plans for Sunday had not been made public though he is known to be a keen golfer.
