Former President Donald Trump was taken to safety by Secret Service agents after gunshots were heard while he was golfing in Florida on Sunday afternoon, his campaign and the Secret Service said.

"President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time," Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a nine-word statement.

The shooting unfolded shortly before 2pm on Sunday at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, when Secret Service agents opened fire at a suspect who was seen holding with a firearm.

The former president was playing golf on the links at Trump International Golf Club at the time, but it was not clear whether the suspect was on the grounds or near it.

The Secret Service said in a post on X that it is coordinating with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a "protective incident" involving Trump, who they said was "safe."

The unidentified suspect dropped the weapon and fled the scene in an SUV, but was later taken into custody in a neighboring country by local law enforcement officials who stopped his vehicle on Interstate 95, the Martin County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff’s office said it made the stop after multiple agencies in Palm Beach County, including the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, the Secret Service and even the FBI, put out a "Be on the lookout" alert.

All of the northbound lanes of I-95 have been shut down, according to the sheriff’s office.

An AK-47 firearm was recovered at the scene near the golf course.

There were no injuries or casualties reported in the shooting, a spokesperson of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

Prior to the shooting, Trump was returning to Florida this weekend from his visits to the West Coast, including a campaign fundraiser at Las Vegas and Utah.

This incident comes roughly two months after Trump was grazed in the ear after getting shot by the late gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, in an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had both been briefed on the "security incident" at the golf course.

"They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team," the White House said.

"I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America," Harris wrote in a post on X.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of Trump's staunchest congressional allies, took to X to say that he had spoken to the former president after news of the shooting broke out.

Graham added that Trump is "in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country."

The Trump International Golf Course, one of three private golf courses that Trump owns in the state, is about five miles from his luxury Mar-a-Lago estate in West Palm Beach.
