Credit and debit card giant Visa has issued an update to customers who found themselves unable to pay by card at major supermarkets including Asda, M&S, Sainsbury's and Tesco today.

Asda and M&S have also issued their own statements acknowledging the issues paying on card that were first reported this morning.

Customes flocked to social media to report that they had been unable to buy groceries or petrol in some cases because of payment system issues and had been asked to pay with cash instead.

A sign in one Sainsbury's supermarket was requesting customers pay for their shopping in cash.

The issue has since been resolved after Visa has issued an update to the Express.

This morning a Visa spokesperson said: "We are aware that some cardholders are experiencing issues when making payments. While Visa’s systems are operating normally, we are working with our partners to investigate.”

Department store and food retailer M&S also issued an update to customers. It said: " We apologise for the disruption this has caused you. We are currently aware of the national issue affecting instore payments and we're working closely with Visa to get this resolved as soon as possible. I've also raised your feedback with the store directly."

Asda acknowledged the issue as it told customers: "Thanks for sharing. I am sorry to hear this I think there has been a problem nationally not just Asda this morning processing card payments- apologies for any inconvenience caused- thanks".

And Sainsbury's told Sky News the cause of the outage: "This was due to an issue with our third-party payment provider.

"We're accepting all payments as usual and continue to monitor the situation. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused."

Earlier on, @Glitterbeam radio reported: "Several businesses this morning are experiencing issues with card payments.

"Reports from customers in @marksandspencer @Tesco ,@asda, @sainsburys, @McDonaldsUK

"Many stores are currently accepting just cash transactions".

It is believed that the issue has now been fixed and payments are being taken as normal again.
