Card payments not working as Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's customers report payment problems

Card payments are not working at major retailers across the UK as customers report issues with Visa and Mastercard payments.

Shoppers at Asda, Sainsbury's, M&S, Tesco and McDonald's among many others are reporting that their cards are not working and they are having to use cash or abandon their trolleys and purchases.

Asda has now confirmed it is a 'problem nationally' and not only affecting Asda supermarkets.

@Glitterbeam radio reported: "Several businesses this morning are experiencing issues with card payments.

"Reports from customers in @marksandspencer @Tesco ,@asda, @sainsburys, @McDonaldsUK

"Many stores are currently accepting just cash transactions"

Asda acknowledged the issue as it said: " Thanks for sharing. I am sorry to hear this I think there has been a problem nationally not just Asda this morning processing card payments- apologies for any inconvenience caused- thanks"

Visa issued a statement to the Express which said: "We are aware that some cardholders are experiencing issues when making payments. While Visa’s systems are operating normally, we are working with our partners to investigate.”

@paysera said: " Due to temporary technical issues, payments made with the Visa payment card may not go through. Cash withdrawals are also currently unavailable. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please follow our status page for further updates."

@nickolls_anc said: " Huge issues with card payments in @asda and ATMs in my area seems to be countrywide, with long queues, machines not working, card declined"
