NHS nurses making their way home from work were attacked by far-right rioters, it has been claimed.

The nurses, reportedly Filipino, said they were "terrified" as they got into a taxi only for it to be targeted with rocks.

One source told The Mirror: "They were in two different taxis and had been called in because of the trouble as emergency cover.

"They managed to get through but they were obviously fearful about what might happen to them."

Northumbria Police said eight people were arrested and three police officers were taken to hospital after the violence on Friday night.

A Citizens Advice Bureau next to a police station was set on fire during the violent scenes. Meanwhile, rioters also flipped a car onto its roof before setting that on fire as well.

Over 100 arrests were made across the UK on Saturday after violence in Liverpool, Manchester, and other cities.

Merseyside Police said a total of 23 people were arrested. In Hull, Humberside Police said they had arrested 20 people.

In Bristol, police made 14 arrests because of violent disorder.

Lancashire Police said more than 20 people were arrested. Staffordshire Police said 10 people were arrested after clashes in Stoke-on-Trent.

The riots have continued on Sunday, with reports of clashes in Rotherham and Middlesbrough.

In Rotherham, a large group of far-right actors stormed a hotel housing asylum seekers. Footage shared on social media appeared to show some of the people outside trying to set the building on fire.

The violence started in Southport after Axel Rudakubana was accused of killing three young girls in an alleged stabbing attack on Monday.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will address the nation on Sunday.

He held emergency talks with ministers on Saturday to discuss the ongoing riots.

On Friday, Sir Keir said: “I’ve just held a meeting with senior police and law enforcement leaders where we’ve resolved to show who we are. A country that will not allow understandable fear to curdle into division and hate in our communities and that will not permit, under any circumstances, a breakdown in law and order on our streets.

“Because let’s be very clear about this. It’s not protest. It’s not legitimate. It’s crime and violent disorder. An assault on the rule of law and the execution of justice.

“And so, on behalf of the British people who expect their values and their security to be upheld, we will put a stop to it.”
