Meghan Markle "deeply regrets" how she left the Royal Family in 2020 and how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex handled the volatile aftermath of their departure, according to reports.

The Duchess of Sussex has specific remorse over how the 'royal racist' controversy dominated headlines after the couple's interview with Oprah Winfrey, according to a source.

The source told Grazia Magazine that Meghan believes her comments "weren’t received in the way that she had expected and several of her comments have backfired".

The source close to Meghan said the 43-year-old “does regret certain statements that she made”.

They added: "Meghan wanted the takeaway from their Oprah interview to be about her mental health, and I think Meghan regretted sitting down with The Cut [in 2022] because she provided endless commentary for her critics."

Royal expert, and Prince Harry's former biographer, Angela Levin , dismissed the suggestions of Meghan's "deep regret" as simply "too late".

Speaking to GB News, Ms Levin said: "She deeply regrets how she behaved towards the royals, and she's very sorry about saying that they were racist.

"I don't know if I believe it, but in any case, it's much too late, isn't it? Everybody's learned that that was nonsense, and it's no longer listened to."

She added that the royal racist controversy had particularly hurt the late Queen, who found the row "very painful".

Meanwhile, Meghan is currently working on launching her American Rivieria Orchard brand, with a product range reportedly involving “home goods including edible treats like jellies, jams and spreads and tableware staples such as cutlery, table linens and drinkware”.

Markle first announced the brand in March. She later sent American Riviera Orchard’s first announced product - a jar of raspberry jam - to celebrity friends including Chrissy Teigen and Kris Jenner.

This week it was reported that American Riviera Orchard had suffered a dramatic setback after being denied a trademark by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), who warned her that businesses "cannot trademark geographical locations".

Ms Levin said the refusal showed that the people managing the brand were "careless".

She added: "You'd think that when you want to do such a big deal, you start with doing that first and then you send 50 jam jars away. You don't do it before you've got everything sorted with the trademark to do that."

However, a source close to Meghan shut down claims of a major setback, telling Vanity Fair that tweaks to the trademark were "to be expected" and that the Duchess is moving ahead with the "routine" process.
