Prince Michael of Greece dies aged 85 as tributes pour in for Prince Philip's first cousin

Prince Michael, who goes by the name of Michel De Gres, is set to be buried in Athens on Thursday.

Prince Michael of Greece has died at the age of 85.

Prince Philip's first cousin was a renowned write and historian, going by the name Michel De Gres. He passed away in Athens, it was announced today.

The last remaining grandson of George I with a lineage to the House of Bourbon through his mother's side of the family, is set to be buried in the Greek capital on Thursday.

He was famously devoted to his wife Marina Karella, as similarly to Edward VIII he renounced his rights to the Greek throne in order to marry her in 1965.

His wife is an artist and the couple have two children together, Princess Olga of Savoy-Aosta and Princess Alexandra of Greece.

Prince Michael is survived by his wife and both his daughters.

Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark was born on January 7 1939 in Rome, Italy, the son of Prince Christopher of Greece and Denmark and his second wife Princess Françoise d'Orléans of France.

Tributes have poured in on social media for the Prince from Royal Family fan accounts, with one writing: "Sad to know Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark passed away in Athens today, aged 85.

"#DYK Michael was a first cousin of Prince Philip & Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent; the last surviving grandchild of King George I of Greece & great-grandkid of King Christian IX of Denmark."

The Royal Circular posted on X: "Prince Michael of Greece has died at the age of 85. He was a first cousin of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh."

Another account commented: "Extremely sorry to hear of the death of Prince Michael of Greece, aged 85. The Prince was the last male first cousin of Prince Philip. The only other alive first cousin of Philip is now Lady Pamela Hicks. Michael was a first cousin once removed of King Charles. Expected British attendance in his funeral."

One fan wrote: "I'm so sorry to learn this. He was such a lovely person, a clever most erudite gentleman, who honored his country, family and history till the very end. Not to mention how modern he was for keeping an active and rich profile on social media far into his 80s. May he rest in peace."

When King Constantine of Greece passed away in January 2023, aged 82, Princess Anne attended the funeral service in Athens of behalf of the Royal Family.

A Service of Thanksgiving for his life was also held a little over a year later at St George's Chapel in Windsor, however King Charles was not able to attend due to his cancer treatment.

Prince William and Princess Kate were also not present, but Queen Camilla, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson were in attendance alongside the late king's widow Queen Anne-Marie, their eldest son, Crown Prince Pavlos and other members of the Greek Royal Family.
