Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been accused of attempting to "rewrite history" as they claimed that their engagement interview from 2017 was like an "orchestrated reality show".

The couple announced to the world their plans to marry in November 2017 and were interviewed for the BBC by Mishal Husain about their relationship.

The Daily Mail's Richard Eden opened up about Harry and Meghan's unhappy reaction to Ms Husain's conduct on this week's Palace Confidential, saying Meghan was now claiming that what occurred in the interview is "not what happened".

He explained: "I think Meghan really is trying to rewrite history, you know. There's one version that was out there at the time and she's trying to say, 'No; that's not what happened at all'.

"But you know, now this is Mishal Husain saying, 'Well, wait a minute, you know. Don't just try to rewrite history like that'."

Mr Eden added that, having looked back at some of the Sussex responses, they seemed "a bit disingenuous" in the interview.

Mr Eden drew attention to Meghan's contradicting stories about how she and Harry met, as she told Ms Husain they met on a blind date whereas on their 2022 Netflix show she said they first connected on Instagram.

He also pointed out the differences in their body language, saying it was "such an interesting contrast" compared to previous royal interviews, as Meghan was "more confident" and "leaning across" Harry.

According to the Duchess of Sussex, the respected BBC journalist Mishal Husain was not "empathetic" enough during the interview and she would reportedly have preferred her friend Oprah Winfrey to do it.

Ms Husain responded to Meghan's claim in Saga magazine, writing: "When the Duchess of Sussex said that my engagement interview with her and Harry was an 'orchestrated reality show' I didn't know what to make of it.

"They seemed to have thought through what their new lives would be like and what marriage would mean for her life in particular. There was nothing that pointed to what would happen. It was two people who were full of joy in each other and life."

Following their wedding in May 2018 Harry and Meghan were working royals for less than two years before they revealed their intention to step down in January 2020.

Also in 2017 Meghan gave an interview to Vanity Fair, after which she was reportedly "hysterical" due to her defying Prince Harry's strict instructions.

Royal author Tom Bower claimed that the Duke had asked his then-girlfriend not to talk about three things - Donald Trump, race and their relationship - during the chat.

But things did not turn out exactly as he had hoped as the former Suits actress appeared on the magazine cover with the headline "She's Just Wild About Harry".
