One of the bridesmaids' beautiful dresses worn to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's wedding has fetched an eye-watering sum at auction of £37,703 ($48,420).

The bespoke ivory gown was worn by Lady Elizabeth Longman, née Lambart, when she served as a bridesmaid at the wedding. She was one of eight bridesmaids to accompany her down the aisle. Lady Elizbaeth was the daughter of the Earl and Countess of Cavan and a childhood friend of Queen Elizabeth.

Speaking of the item, a spokesperson for British auction house, Christie's said: "It’s a wonderful opportunity to acquire an evocative and rare example of royal fashion history.

"With its delicate design, beautiful embroidery and exquisite sense of movement, this elegant dress epitomizes the glamor of Sir Norman’s commissions and the hope that the wedding of the late Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh gave to post-war Britain."

It was expected to fetch between about £30,000 to £50,000 at auction.

Christie’s specialist Benedict Winter described the relationship between Lady Elizabeth and the then Princess Elizabeth, He said: "She grew up in the orbit of the royal family and knew Princess Elizabeth from an early age. Both girls attended the same dance school and were part of the Buckingham Palace Girl Guides company. I imagine it would have been a wonderful honor to serve as a bridesmaid at the royal wedding."

Queen Elizabeth's bridesmaids all matched in ivory dresses with scoop necklines, ruched bodices and voluminous tulle skirts with satin floral headpieces in their hair.

The dresses were designed by the celebrated British couturier Sir Norman Hartnell, who also created the late Queen’s wedding dress and 1953 coronation gown.

Lady Elizabeth once loaned her royal bridesmaid dress to the Fashion Museum Bath from the 1980s to the early 2000s, and it was even worn by British supermodel, Kate Moss.

Speaking of trying on the outfit, Kate Moss said: "Meeting Lady Elizabeth and wearing her dress, which had such a wonderful heritage, was a magical moment for me. I felt like I was wearing a piece of history."

It came about in 2012, when Moss was doing a photoshoot for Love magazine at a house where Lady Elizabeth happened to be staying, and Lady Elizabeth was persuaded to pose with her.

Speaking of the moment, Christie's specialist also added: "It’s an incredibly poignant image, which shows the old world of aristocratic glamour and the new world of popular culture colliding."

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's wedding day took place at Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947, and was broadcast by BBC Radio to an audience of over 200 million people.
