Princess Anne calls King Charles 'old bean'

Princess Anne and King Charles have a warm and close relationship - as demonstrated by the adorable nickname the Princess Royal has used to address her elder brother at a very delicate time.

The only daughter of late Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II was featured in the BBC documentary titled 'Charles III: The Coronation Year' released in late 2023.

In the programme, the Princess Royal can be seen arriving in a room where King Charles is donning his Coronation robe and, with a huge smile, addressing him as "Old Bean".

The monarch appeared delighted by the presence of Anne, who is 21 months younger than him, and as he smiled at her he grabbed his sister's hand to kiss it affectionately.

The close bond between Anne and Charles was made apparent by the role she played during the historic Coronation of the King in May last year.

The then 72-year-old served as Gold Stick, the ceremonial bodyguard entrusted with the safety of the sovereign.

The relationship between the King and the Princess Royal has recently been analysed by royal expert Hannah Furness.

In a video for the Telegraph, the news outlet's royal editor said: "[Princess Anne] is, personally to King Charles, a real sounding board and a right-hand woman. They have grown up together, they have spent their childhood together when the [late] Queen and Prince Philip were travelling a lot, they are very close."

Referring to Anne's adorable nickname for the monarch, Ms Furness added: "There was a lovely moment in the documentary recently where we saw her calling King Charles 'Old Bean'.

"They have this very warm relationship. She is probably in a better position than anyone to give him advice, give him a bit of sympathy when he needs it, give him a bit of a pep talk.

"She understands how the Royal Family works and she has a bit of an eye to the past and to the future, so they have this long history that she has been part of and understands how they can carry on in this slightly slimmed-down monarchy."

This came as the Princess Royal is recovering at Southmead Hospital after suffering minor injuries and concussion following an incident likely involving a horse at her Gatcombe Park estate.

The princess has been visited so far by her daughter Zara Tindall and beloved husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

Asked about Anne's state, Sir Timothy said on Wednesday she was "recovering slowly".

The princess' husband had headed to the hospital also on Tuesday, carrying a cool bag with "a few treats from home".
