King Charles showed off his language skills as he welcomed the Emperor and Empress of Japan to Britain.

The monarch opened the state banquet dinner at Buckingham Palace earlier this evening - and even made a light-hearted joke about his grandchildren.

To mark the start of their three-day visit to the UK, the monarch and Queen Camilla welcomed Emperor Narahito and his wife, Empress Masako, to the dinner at Buckingham Palace.

Earlier today, Prince William became the first royal to greet Emperor Narahito and Empress Masako ahead of pomp and pageantry of the Japanese state visit. The heir to the British throne met the couple on behalf of His Majesty The King before a ceremony at Horse Guards Parade

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, will visit many of London's most famous sights during their stay in the UK.

Later in the week, Emperor Naruhito and his wife will visit St George’s Chapel to lay flowers for the Queen. In addition, they will also go to the Thames Barrier, something Emperor Naruhito is said to be fascinated by.

Princess Anne, following an incident at her home on Sunday, will not be joining events as part of the visit this week. The 73-year-old is said to have been kicked by a horse at her home in Gloucestershire and is currently remaining in hospital under observation.

Queen Camilla stunned in the Burmese Ruby and diamond tiara

The Queen stunned in a cream silk crepe embroidered dress by Fiona Clare, one of her signature designers, which she paired with silver heels and a silver clutch.

She accessorised the beautiful ensemble with a diamond necklace and a matching set of ruby and diamond earrings and bracelet.

But it was Camilla's striking and highly controversial tiara which stole the show - the Burmese Ruby and diamond tiara, famously worn by the late Queen Elizabeth and estimated to be worth around £7million.

Elizabeth commissioned the House of Garrard in 1973 to create the Burmese Ruby tiara with gems she received as a wedding present from the people of Burma.

The tiara features a total of 96 rubies and a selection of diamonds, including some from the Nizam of Hyderabad tiara, which had to be dismantled, in order for the new tiara to be made.

The State Banquet was packed with royals, politicians and celebs

The King and Queen were joined by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, who had the honour of sitting next to the Emperor on the top table, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Princess Anne, who spent a third night in hospital after a horse injury, was due to attend alongside her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence but both pulled out after the incident.

Rishi Sunak was joined by a handful of his top team, with invites also extended to the leader of the opposition, who was sat next to the King’s private secretary Sir Clive Alderton and Liberal Democrat leader SIr Ed Davey.

Lord Webber, Youtuber Chris Broad, chef Miho Sato and former astronaut Naoko Yamazaki were also among the guests.

The Emperor’s speech also celebrated the “friendship and goodwill” of the two nations and said: “Our bilateral relations have never been more robust.”

He spoke fondly of the late Queen Elizabeth who he said “I greatly admired” and noted the importance of working together.

Emperor Naruhito also dropped in a line about an analogue computer system resembling Doctor Who’s Tardis before toasting to the King and Queen’s good health and the lasting happiness of the people of Japan and the UK.

King references his grandchildren during speech

His Majesty spoke fondly about his fond memories of going to the opera and fly fishing with Emperor Naruhito.

He said: “I am only sorry to report that I haven’t had any better luck with more recent attempts at fishing - the Pokemon phrase ‘gotta catch ‘em all” may resonate with my grandchildren, but for me it is, perhaps, aspirational.”

The King then toasted to the Emperor and Empress and the Japanese people before saying Kan-Pai - cheers in Japanese.

King Charles hails "close friendship" between Japan and UK in speech

The King hailed the “close friendship” between Japan and Britain as he welcomed the country’s Emperor and Empress for a three-day state visit.

Speaking at the state banquet, Charles spoke fondly of the two nation’s shared values, commitment to the urgent climate crisis, love of tea and even wished a happy 50th birthday to Hello Kitty.

“My wife and I are so delighted to be able to welcome you to Buckingham Palce this evening,” he said, before saying in Japanese: “Welcome back to Britain!”

The King noted that the core of their partnership is “a close friendship” and detailed how Japan and Britain have forged closer ties through innovation, business, science and security.

He joked: “Supporting all these shared endeavours and the enduring ties between our people that transcend geography - and that does not just mean how much we enjoy tea, and talking about the weather!”

Queen Camilla debuts King Charles's Family Order for first time with subtle changes

The King’s Family Order was worn for the first time at tonight's state banquet, with Camilla wearing both Charles's and the late Queen’s badge.
It features a new portrait of the King - painted by miniaturist Elizabeth Meek MBE this year and based on a photograph of the monarch wearing the uniform of Admiral of the Fleet and his array of decorations taken by Hugo Bernard in 2023 - surrounded by diamonds weighing 10.41 carat and suspended from a pale blue silk bow.
The diamonds are used from the existing collection of loose stones in Royal possession. His Majesty personally selected the colour of the ribbon, which is based on the Family Order of his great-grandfather, King George V, and marks a change from the yellow that decorated the late Queen’s.
The miniature is painted in oil on synthetic polymin rather than ivory, as has traditionally been the case. Polymin is a translucent treated plastic sheet - which is similar in texture to ivorine.
