Friends of King Charles have stated he wishes to develop a closer relationship with his youngest grandchildren, Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three, but this desire could backfire.

Having only had limited communications with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's children, mostly via video calls, he is said to be keen to be "more present in their lives". Royal commentator Michael Cole told MailOnline: "Painfully aware that time is precious, the King regrets that he cannot be closer to his grandchildren Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet."

He added: "The antipathy between Prince Harry and his wife Meghan and the Royal Family has created a deep divide that makes normal family relationships so fraught as to be almost impossible."

However, columnist Amanda Platell has warned the catch about seeing his grandchildren would mean seeing the Montecito-based duo more too.

Writing for the same publication, Amanda said this would bring a "whole host of problems". She writes: "One can only imagine the unholy circus. If they brought the grandkids here to see the King, would Meghan have her Netflix crew in tow filming every moment?"

Amanda also explains Meghan's wish for self-promotion could conflict with the King. She writes: "Would she bring Grandpa Charles her new homemade jams she’s flogging, then post the pictures on Instagram? Would details of the time they and their children spent with the King be sold off to the highest bidder?"

The columnist explains shortly after Prince Harry visited his father in Clarence House after his cancer diagnosis became public, he conducted a TV interview with ABC's Good Morning, just days later in Canada where he spoke of his family.

Amanda explains: "Charles should be grateful for what he has – the love of a devoted son, daughter-in-law and their three children - and be wary of what he naturally wishes for in his desire to see his Californian grandchildren."

Writing about the Waleses' family "loyalty" to the King, Amanda claims William and Kate have "done everything they can" to support the King and make sure she he is close to their three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six.

However, Harry may reconsider future visits to the UK as he recently was informed he is able to appeal against a High Court ruling which dismissed his challenge over a decision to downgrade his level of personal security when he visits the UK.

Prince Harry first took legal action against the Home Office in 2020 over a decision that he should receive a different degree of taxpayer-funded protection after stepping down as a working royal.

In February, the High Court ruled that decision was lawful and dismissed Harry's case, before in April refusing him permission to challenge that ruling in a higher court.

Now the Court of Appeal has said it will hear his challenge following a direct application from Harry's lawyers.
