Today King Charles and senior royals will be out in full force to celebrate the historic Trooping the Colour.

This is the second official birthday celebration for Charles, who has had a tumultuous year so far following his cancer diagnosis.

Charles will celebrate his 76th birthday on November 14th, but monarchs historically hold an official celebration in the summer to make the most of the weather. To celebrate, more than 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians will line the Horse Guards Parade.

The King will travel in a procession towards Buckingham Palace via carriage, not horseback as per tradition, before taking to the balcony. There he will be joined by senior royals to witness the RAF flypast

The event could cost as much as £10million, with the bill covered by Buckingham Palace.

The Palace funds the ceremony using money generated from the Duchies of Lancaster or Cornwall alongside the Sovereign Grant.

This means the taxpayer does indirectly pay for Trooping the Colour as the Sovereign Grant is tax-funded and allocated by the Treasury.

Alongside this, there will be further costs for deploying police and the military, as well as spending by the City of Westminster and Ministry of Defence.

The event is a historic one, and some may feel it is right the taxpayer helps fund it. However, others may argue the monarch should contribute to his own birthday celebration.
