All eyes are set on Hugh Grosvenor's lavish wedding in Chester today but the Duke of Westminster is not one who enjoys the spotlight.

"Hughie" as he is known to friends and family, will exchange vows with fiance Olivia Henson in a Brigherton-like ceremony which will take place at noon at Chester Cathedral, with around 400 eclectic guests, including the Prince of Wales.

The 33-year-old, dubbed the richest person in Britain under 40, has been enjoying a quieter life away from the spotlight in recent years.

But that wasn't always the case, as 12 years ago, his extravagant 21st birthday party caused quite a media storm.

The bash, which reportedly cost £5 million took place at his family’s Eaton Hall estate in Chester and had quite the attendees.

It also made headlines for its bizarre "black and neon" dress code and its extravaganza.

The 800 guests, including Prince Harry, who is not attending today's ceremony, were entertained by comedian Michael McIntyre and hip hop group Rizzle Kicks.

Hugh's bash included a driveaway lit up by torches and candles, which also featured a beaming green laser shot into the sky from an obelisk.

Guests were welcomed by the duke and his parents the then Duke and Duchess of Westminster with a glass of champagne.

According to the Chester Chronicle, the eclectic attendees were treated to an eye-catching firework display before enjoying a very posh dinner - a "tasting plate" of half a scotch egg, smoked salmon and Morecambe Bay potted shrimps for starters; steak and chips for the main course. The Urban Soul Orchestra played while the guests enjoyed puddings, which were provided in a bar area off the dance floor.

The marquee was said to be dark with dramatic table decorations.

Both Hugh, then known as Earl Grosvenor and his late father gave a speech.

Gerald Grosvenor said that his son was the first heir in 133 years to be both born at Eaton and to celebrate their 21st birthday there, while he also thanked everyone for supporting and contributing to his son's childhood.

The seventh Duke of Westminster joked during his speech and talked about growing up with sisters as he thanked his parents for their unconditional love.

After dinner, the guests were treated to quality comedy by Michael McIntyre before dancing to Rizzle Kicks's hip-hop hits and later disco.

At midnight a lighting display popped up reading "Happy Birthday Hugh", with the bash reportedly lasting well into the early hours.

Hugh later said: "The party was simply amazing - a birthday and a party I will never forget. It is the beginning of a new era in my life and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead."
