With summer holidays approaching, many gardeners are concerned about how to keep their plants hydrated while they're away.

Gardening expert Simon Akeroyd has shared a time-tested solution using an ancient Mediterranean irrigation method that ensures plants receive a steady supply of water even in your absence.

Akeroyd recommends using a simple terracotta pot as the key to this effective watering technique. "This method, known as 'olla' irrigation, has been used for centuries in Mediterranean regions," Akeroyd explained.

"It’s a reliable way to keep your plants watered without the need for complex systems or frequent monitoring."

Are you off on holiday soon but worried about how to water your plants while you are away? Heres an easy solution for you. Its an ancient Mediterranean method of watering your plants. Sink a porous terracotta pot filled with water into plants that need watering whilst you are on holiday. The water slowly leaches out of the pot and into your soil. #wateringplants #wateringonholiday #growyourgroceries #growyourownfood

To use this method, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the Pot: Use a cork or blue tack to bung up the drainage hole in a terracotta pot. This prevents the water from draining out too quickly.
  2. Dig a Hole: Dig out a hole next to your plant that is deep enough to accommodate the terracotta pot.
  3. Place the Pot: Place the prepared terracotta pot into the hole.
  4. Fill with Water: Fill the terracotta pot with water.
  5. Cover the Pot: Cover the pot with a stone or tile to reduce evaporation.

The water slowly leaches out of the porous terracotta pot and waters the roots of the plant directly. This method ensures that plants receive a consistent supply of moisture over an extended period, making it ideal for keeping your garden healthy while you're on holiday.

The porous nature of terracotta allows for a slow and steady release of water, directly to the root zone of the plant.  This not only conserves water but also prevents over-watering, which can be just as damaging as under-watering.

In addition to being a practical solution for holiday watering, the olla method is also environmentally friendly. It reduces water waste and promotes deep root growth, leading to healthier, more resilient plants.
